Mary J. Blige Talks about Her “Chicken Commercial”
Mary J. Blige went on HOT 97 to finally talk about her “chicken commercial” with Angie Marinez. Mary claims on the show that she never meant to offend and disrespect black culture. The commercial, as we were told, was actually an unfinished version that leaked ahead of time. “On the part where it says, ‘what’s in the chicken wraps,’ I was asking them a question for real because I couldn’t remember what I was singing about.” Mary claims that part was sped up to further make her look foolish.
The thing that hurt me is when people were just starting to say vicious, negative things that didn’t even have nothing to do with that. What this did is expose everyone and everything that was in my life. And it showed me who my friends are. So many people reached out to me on a level of we know what you were trying to do. We saw how it went terribly wrong.
It was sold to us that I would be shot in a iconic way and it was going to be great. And I used one of the melodies of my song to do it, to sing the ingredients. I would never bust out and start singing about chicken and chicken wings. I was looking for someone to have mercy but no one had mercy.
Mary said she feels like this was a mistake, after having dreams of doing fast food jingles since a young age. Girl, I’m a let her have that, though. Don’t want to crush people’s dreams. Even though this “branding opportunity” didn’t work for her, I still feel the same way about her as I did before. But yes, I made jokes but people should be allowed to laugh at themselves. It’s when things get a lil too negative that causes the real drama.
Check out the interview after the jump where they compare Mary’s commercial to David’s.
