‘Glee’ Recap: Is ‘The New Rachel’ Better Than The Old?

And this is what happened last night on GLEE.

We began the show with Rachel Berry during her first dance class of the semester with none other than leading lady Kate Hudson as instructor Cassandra July. Rachel tried her best to keep up with the talented girls and guys (who were insanely cute), but Cassandra didn’t want any part of Rachel’s lackluster choreography, simply telling Rachel, “you suck.” Cassandra also did a phenomenal routine later in the show to a mash-up of Lady Gaga’s Americano and Jennifer Lopez’s Dance Again. Man, that was the performance of the night and set the bar high for the season.

We find out Rachel is struggling with college life (and a roommate who is going through the school boys quicker than water through a hose), and is forced to do her nightly routine at 3 in the morning. This is when she encounters a stunning male baritone singing in the shower. She turns and the audience is introduced to ‘Glee’s’ new member Brody Weston (Dean Geyer.) But we’ll just call him “New Finn” since that’s evidently who he’ll be replacing. Rachel obviously forms an attraction to him and it’s sealed with Brody telling her, “I’m straight,” which is very necessary when it comes to an art school.

Now at the high school, Wade “Unique” Adams (Alex Newell), officially joins the cast of Glee (something foreshadowed last season finale) as our “New Mercedes,” and competes with the other “left-over” members of the club to find who will be the “New Rachel,” hence the name of last night’s episode. The students begin to sing this summer’s hit single Call Me Maybe, but a new Rachel can’t be determined. Schuester decides to hold open auditions to give everyone in the school a chance to show their talent and possibly join the club.

Moving on, we find Kurt working at the local coffee spot. Poor him. Not only is he no longer in school, but he’s trying every desperate ploy to remain in his boyfriend’s life and have a reason to wake up in the morning. We couldn’t help but feel bad for him the entire episode.

We then meet the new girl Marley (Melissa Benoist) whose mother is the new, LARGE lunch lady that sews J. Crew labels onto Walmart clothes so her daughter can be accepted. Her mother is also forcing her daughter to deny her so the students won’t know that her mom is a lunch lady to sit at the popular table. Talk about sad and depressing. Do things like this really happen in school? Later in the show, she does a performance of New York State of Mind for her audition and strangely enough, Rachel sings the same song for NYADA. Talk about coincidental. Their vocals were oddly matched, as they unintentionally competed with one another for the spot of “Better Rachel.”

Next, we meet the new boy Jake (Jacob Artist), who will be the “New Finn” for New Directions since Brody will be Rachel’s new Finn. Jake does an amazing cover of The Fray’s Never Say Never. His rendition has possibly found itself on a lot of iPods by now because his voice is that phenomenal. The most interesting fact about Jake Puckerman is that he’s related to a fan favorite from season’s past. If you caught onto the hint, then you realized that Jake is Puck’s younger, half-brother. “Papa was a rolling stone.” And just like Puck, Jake has the same temper, having a tantrum after Shuester stopped his performance before he could finish. And just like Puck, he didn’t care to apologize.

At the end, Kurt surprises a homesick Rachel in NYC by moving there. Jake and Marley get their chance to sing with New Directions. And Unique stayed fabulous throughout the entire show with a beat face and sick’ning outfit to match.

Now, will we ever get to see Quinn, Finn, or Mercedes again? Will Rachel finally get her act together at NYADA winning the devotion from peers and instructors while also winning the heart of Brody? Will Kurt find his place in NYC beside his talented and accomplished friend Rachel? What will happen to Klaine? Will Jake and Marley be the school’s new “It” couple with stellar vocals to enhance their already gorgeous looks? Is the “New Rachel” better than the old? And will Unique wear a wig and flawless makeup every episode? These are things we’d like to know. What do you think and be sure to post some of your questions.

And that’s what you missed on ‘GLEE!’
