NEW VIDEO: Frank Ocean, ‘Pyramids’

Frank Ocean premiered his video for Pyramids from his Channel Orange album after his first night performing on Saturday Night Live.

The video follows Frank on a motorcycle ride in the desert to a memory or fantasy of him at a strip club, evidently called Pyramids. Inside the club, Frank appears to be on some type of acid trip, which distorts his vision of the girls. The girls could also be transforming into their real identities, or something.

I really had a difficult time trying to understand what the metaphor is behind the video and the metaphor of the Pyramids’ lyrics. Maybe I’m just not smart enough to understand.

John Mayer made an appearance playing the guitar at the end of the video. Frank is still in somewhat of a trance as John plays a soft, mellow tune on the chords. And at this point, I’m still lost.

Frank wakes up in the desert with sand all over his suit and face. But as for me, I’m still left wondering what the video was about and what is his meaning behind his lyrics.

For some time now I have been feeling that we all may have jumped on the Frank Ocean bandwagon because he “came out.” During his performance on SNL, I felt like he made his songs worse in a sense because it was a live showing of the confusion I have for his music. Even his performance of Thinking Bout You left me unmoved, and I like and understand that track. I listened to his album front to back, in the dark, giving it my complete attention and still came out with nothing. And I am not the only one who thinks this.

How do you feel about Frank’s music? Do you think I’m just being really mean and don’t know what I’m talking about? Watch the video below along with his performance on SNL and post your thoughts below. I’d love to hear them.

I honestly feel like he is trying too hard to be deep and profound. The art of music and lyrics rests on the notion that others can relate to it. I don’t know what audience he is attempting to reach, what message he is sending, or if he even wants to be understood at this point. I agree, when he first came out, I had just a moment of fascination with his music, trying to read into it and understand, not necessarily relate but at least grasp his emotions, ideas, etc. And I can honestly say ambiguity sucks. I’m sorry but don’t leave 7 open doors. Its just mind boggling and I had to leave him and is Orange Crush commercial alone, regardless of how much others like it. I don’t think they can really explain most concepts that he is portraying either. With all that said, I’m over and off the Frank Ocean Wave. At least until he can come forward and speak a little more (because deep down, I still wanna know. Like is this whole pyramids thing about the big I in the room or what….?)
    Yours truly.

Ok so here’s what I think the video is about. First let me discuss the song. From what I’ve heard, the song, in all of it’s 9mins of glory, details how women went from being queens in Africa to twerking it on the pole for a couple dollars. Now the video clearly doesn’t depict that. So i think with the recent revelation of him being bisexual or whatever, the video is somewhat an illustration of his struggles with his sexuality. Like from the big booty bitches’ faces distorting into a more masculine-like look. It’s as if his mind is playing some confusing trick on him. And the parts with him on the motorcycle in the desert could be him running away from his true self. Or the part with him in a trance with John Mayer could illustrat a mood in which his just so lost on what his identity is. That’s what I got from it. Not sure if u exactly understand where I’m coming from lol.
